Transportation in Myanmar

Domestic Flights: The main tourist centers are located at a distance from Yangon and it is convenient for visitors to travel by domestic flights to major tourist sites including Mandalay, Bagan, Heho, Thandwe, Myitkyina, Tachileik, and Kawthaung. There are 8 commercial domestic airlines such as Asian Wing, Air Kanbawza, FMI Air, Air Mandalay, Golden Myanmar Airlines, Mann Yadanapon Airlines, Myanmar National Airlines, Yangon Airways those fly at least 25 operating airports within Myanmar.

Inland Waterways: Myanmar has many rivers and a large delta in which the Inland Water Transport operates a huge fleet of double and triple-decker boats. There is a regular service between Bamaw and Mandalay and between Mandalay and Pyay via Bagan. At the present, Inland Waterways transport (IWT) is providing a range of services for the secure and smooth transportation in Myanmar. Currently, it has a fleet of 322 vessels comprising passenger cum cargo vessels, powered barges, pusher tugs, dumb barges station pontoons and etc.

Rail Service: Yangon-Mandalay is the main rail link with four express trains running daily between Yangon and Mandalay. From Thazi on the Yangon-Mandalay line, a branch line runs to Shwenyaung and to Taunggyi. From Mandalay, there are rail services to Myitkyina, Pyin Oo Lwin, Lashio, Monywa, and Bagan. There is also a rail service from Yangon to Bagan which operate on alternate days.

Road Transport: Most tourist sites are accessible by road. Over 12 Union Highways with a total of 2,452 miles running north to south. From these highways, other highways running east-west are added. Totally, there are 45 north-south highways of 5,692 miles and 35 east-west highways of 9,450 miles. This gives a total of 80 highways with a total of 15,142 miles. The main highways that running in Myanmar are  Yangon – Mandalay; Mandalay – Myitkyina, Mandalay – Lashio;  Meikhtila – Taunggyi; Pyay – Magway. Limousine taxis and mini-buses are available in Yangon for sightseeing and country tours.
